Since the official movie trailer/posters have come out last week, I have been extremely excited for Expendables 3! I have August 15th marked on my calendar and have already made plans with a friend to go watch it! Here are some behind the scenes photos, all including my favorite man Sylvester Stallone! Enjoy!

1. Which do you enjoy more, acting or directing? —Casper Andersen, COPENHAGEN
Oh, there’s no question about it: directing. You are the architect. If it’s good, great. If it fails, it’s because your vision wasn’t good. It’s the idea of building something from the foundation up. When you’re an actor, you’re a slave to other people’s visions.

2. You’re an accomplished writer. How has your writing for the screen affected your acting? —Carey Wallace, CHELSEA, MICH.
Well, my writing for the screen is really the reason I’m here. I was not very good in school. If you’re not brilliant, you try to find something that resonates. With acting, I was going nowhere. I was like Mugger No. 3 in every movie. When you’re playing the fourth lead on Spy Kids, you know you’re not doing well.

3. I grew up watching your movies. Why do you think there’s such strong sentiment these days against action films? —Javier Negron Rivera, LAS PIEDRAS, P.R.
There has always been an elitist attitude toward action films. Good action films — not crap, but good action films — are really morality plays. They deal in modern, mythic culture. The industry has dismissed that, which I think is a big flaw. Action films have been the cornerstone of this business. Without those escapist films, they wouldn’t be making the so-called important dramas.

4. How do you feel about today’s CGI-heavy action movies? —Dennis Reyes, MANILA
I think audiences have hit the wall with CGI and special effects. They have seen so many over-the-top events that they can’t suspend disbelief. I think because some of the films have not delivered, there might be a revisionist return to classic action films like The Wild Bunch or the Charles Bronson [films] or Dirty Harry.

5. Is there a chance in hell you will ever write, direct and star in another Rocky movie? —Kelly Doerfler, CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, PA.
The last Rocky took 19 years to get off the ground, and it was quite a challenge. It’d be interesting to do a Frank Capra — esque one, where Rocky runs for mayor: a simple blue-collar guy goes all the way. But I learned in Rocky V that you really can’t tamper with that formula. When he’s outside the ring, that’s another character. You’ve seen the end of Rocky. I’m really happy with the way he rode off into the sunset.

6. Rocky is an icon. Has it been a burden or a blessing to have played such a powerful archetype so early in your career? —Mat Sansom, NORFOLK, ENGLAND
When I was younger, I thought it was a burden, and I did everything in the world to go against it. Now that I’ve gotten older, it’s the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me. I took my run at drama. I’ve done my things with comedy, and this is where I belong.

7. Can you fight in real life? —Eli Seegs, SYDNEY
I’m pretty good. I’ve always been very aggressive and quick with my hands. That’s why I decided, when I had the chance to do Rocky, to become a boxer, because I thought I could pull that off, as opposed to a tennis player or a running back.

8. Do you ever work out to the Rocky song? —Dave Burgess, DUBLIN
Yeah, I do every now and then, believe it or not. It does work. Even after 30 years it gets me going. It’s amazing.

9. Are there any more goals you wish to accomplish? —Travis Chandler, VERONA, VA.
There are always goals. If you don’t have a mountain, build one and then climb it. And after you climb it, build another one; otherwise you start to flatline in your life. People think retiring is fun. Well, maybe, but if you have a certain kind of fire inside, there is no end in sight.

10. What made you not want to follow through with Rambo 5? —Alfonso Pinto, WHITTIER, CALIF.
It would be very inappropriate at my age to have Rambo disappearing into the woods. Where’s he going to go? When does he stop running — when he’s 90? He can’t run anymore. Why? Because he can’t get his walker up the hill!

Review of the movie

Would I watch it again? Yes, over and over.

My favorite part(s): I really enjoyed this movie beginning to end. I found it to have the best lines, and found myself laughing a couple times. To narrow it down I really liked the fact that John Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) dropped everything to rescue Colonel Trautman (Richard Crenna), knowing he would do the same. All of Rambo’s fight scenes have you wondering if he will make it through. He is great with using weapons, but is equally as good fighting with his hands. For some reason I just loved the part when Rambo climbs out of a cave, and starts fighting a guard who has a bomb in his pocket. Once he got his arms free, he takes the pin out of the bomb and kicks the guard down the cave’s entrance and before the guard hits the bottom he blows up everywhere! I also loved the fact that Rambo wore Co’s (from First Blood: Part Two) necklace for luck.

My favorite lines:
Mousa(Sasson Gabai): You’re not with military, not mercenary – what you are? Lost tourist?
Rambo: I’m no tourist.

Colonel Trautman (Richard Crenna): How’s the wound?
Rambo: You taught us to ignore pain, right?
Colonel Trautman: Is it working?
Rambo: Not really. Don’t take it personal.
Colonel Trautman: Thanks.

Colonel Trautman: Can you fly that helicopter?
Rambo: Let’s find out!

Zaysen(Marc de Jonge): Who are you?
Rambo: Your worst nightmare.

Zaysen: Are you insane? One man against trained commandos… Who do you think this man is? God?
Colonel Trautman: No. God would have mercy. He won’t.

Hamid(Doudi Shoua): What’s that?
Rambo: It’s blue light.
Hamid: What does it do?
Rambo: It turns blue.

Extra comments: The fact that Sylvester Stallone is 42 in this movie, blows me away! In the 1990 edition of the Guiness Book of World Records this film was noted to be the most violent with 221 acts of violence and 108 deaths. In interviews Stallone says he is still sunburnt from filming Rambo 3 in the hot dessert. In the beginning scene of Rambo working on a Monk’s temple in return for food was really a temple under renovations. Several Monks that were in those scenes were real, and were paid for their roles. The horse Stallone used was also used by Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989).

Deeper Meaning: To me, this movie shows an absolute trust between Trautman and Rambo. Rambo thought he wanted to start anew and have a different life, but had to be there to rescue his dear friend, no matter what the consequences were.
